In late 2024, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) posted a request for public comments on Ethical Guidelines for Research Using Pervasive Data.

The PERVADE team prepared detailed responses to several of the questions included in the request. You can read the team’s response here.

Casey Fiesler has long posted short-form videos on ethics and has more than 100k followers on Tiktok. You can find here videos here.

Back in 2017, the PERVADE team wrote a response to a NY Times oped by Cathy O’Neil, which bemoaned the lack of academic attention to educating lawmakers and holding tech companies responsible for biased systems. We argued that we are not asleep at the wheel; rather, important work was being conducted on ethics in technology, but that research faces numerous challenges from the tech sector and funders.
